FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

Here at Financial Solutions Geraldton we know it's a big step to come to a financial adviser and we want you to be sure you are choosing the right adviser for you.

Every day we get people ringing us and the same questions are asked. So to save you a bit of time, here are the answers to questions we know you're thinking of asking.

Q: What is financial planning?

A: Efficient financial planning delivers a host of benefits, the main one being peace of mind that you are doing what you need to do in order to achieve your financial goals.

Other benefits of financial planning include debt and tax management, wealth creation to achieve financial and lifestyle goals, secured retirement income, personal insurance protection to ensure that your dependants are financially secure, and effective estate planning.

At Financial Solutions Geraldton we believe financial planning is all about the client. We start with where you are now and guide you to where you want to be financially. We talk about your goals and dreams and what’s important to you in your life. We then map out a strategy to help you achieve it. Investing is the last part of the financial planning process. If you need an investment, superannuation or insurance product, then we will recommend it but the most important aspect is getting the strategy right and ensuring that our recommendations are meaningful to you.

Q: What does a financial planner do?

A:  A financial planner uses the financial planning process to help you  meet your life goals. The planner takes a `big picture` view of your financial situation and makes recommendations that are right for you or works with you on a single financial issue but within the context of your overall situation.

At Financial Solutions Geraldton we look at all of your needs, including budgeting and saving, ownership structures, tax planning, investments, insurance, retirement planning and financial strategies.

This big picture approach to your financial goals sets Financial Solutions Geraldton apart from other financial advisers who may be more investment focused.

Financial planners can help you achieve financial goals -  they don’t replace other professionals such as lawyers or accountants, instead they work with them throughout the planning process.

Q: There's lots of people who call themselves financial planners. What makes Financial Solutions Geraldton different?

A: First of all, the people who make up Financial Solutions Geraldton are all highly qualified. Lisa Greeve is a CERTIFIED FINANCIAL PLANNERTM and is accredited with the RIAA.

Lisa makes sure you have the time you need to make decisions, and helps you understand everything about the advice given. Our passion is for socially responsible investment selection and ethical advice.

Our transparent fee structure means there's no hidden surprises.  A fee is agreed upfront with no commissions on investments. Because the advice doesn't come free, you can be sure that it's tailored to your specific needs.

Q: What are the fees?

A:  We're very upfront about this. Your initial appointment will cost $90.00. At this meeting we get to know each other and to find out if we can help you and if you would like to work with us.

At this meeting we provide a quote for the work you want us to undertake and outline what this will cover. We also agree on an ongoing service fee to make sure that your financial position remains current and relevant to you. Should you wish to proceed with full advice the fee charged for your intial appointment will be waived.

No commission is charged on investment products, though we may take commission on life insurance products. This will be clearly explained to you.

Q: Lots of financial planners say they're licensed but is there any particular accreditation that I should I be looking for?

A:  Firstly, ensure your adviser is appropriately licensed through either a dealer group or directly with ASIC (Australian Securities and Investments Commission). The next step is check the qualifications of the adviser you are thinking about working with and whether they are a member of a professional industry body, such as the Financial Planning Association

The highest professional designation for a financial planner is to be a Certified Financial Planner (CFPTM). Check that your adviser is a CFPTM or working towards this designation.

Q: Is Financial Solutions Geraldton licensed?

A: Yes. We are licensed through FYG Planners Pty Ltd, holder of an Australian Financial Services Licence.

Q: I have heard people talk about 'ethical investing'; what is it and is it important to me?

A: Have you ever had concerns about the environmental damage some companies seem to inflict? Are you concerned about the lack of transparency at Board level of some companies? Have you ever been appalled when companies have been found guilty of child exploitation?

Ethical investing (also known as Socially Responsible Investing) is a way of  turning your social concern into a financial decision.

Ethical investing screens out companies involved in these (and other) destructive activities and actively seeks out companies that are leaders in environmental and social change. It is a way for you, as an investor,  to “put your money where your mouth is”.
